I played the nine down at the South Shore this morning and found a few surprises. The first surprise was the near absence of golfers. There was maybe ten golfers in the hour between 7:30am and 8:30am. Maybe. The fairways have always been tight, but now that they are mowed with regularity, the tightness is more evident than ever. The trees are getting wider and the rough is long and grabby, which makes placement of that darn ball in the fairway more important than ever. manicured fairways are good for the soul, the rough will leave you wanting hard liquor. Every green at the South Shore is in perfect condition right now. Every green. The breaks are subtle and the grain would have affected the roll more had it been later in the day, but the roll was true and I only found two wayward ball marks during my round. There was standing water from the rains over this past weekend, standing water on #6, but early in the fairway and easily driven over, again on #8, where the standing water was able to be driven over, but you could lay up if you suck.
Only one sand trap was encountered, and that was at the same time, muddy and hard pack. I'd suggest drainage and new sand, but I'm no greenskeeper/architect.
2 hour and 10 minutes for the nine. Not bad. eleven dollars makes it great.

Haven't played there in years. Though used to play Jackson Park often when I first started to play. I remember it as a pretty interesting track and have been to a couple of wedding receptions there. Now that I live more north (Irving Park and Elston), the nine holes I play more is Billy Caldwell and Robert Black.

Billy Caldwell is a bit longer than Robert Black and allows hitting the driver more, but has no traps and greens are on a bit more of the boring side.

I was told Robert Black used to be a 18 hole Country Club many moons ago (long before we were born). Robert Black officially opened as the nine hole golf course in 1979 and was designed by Dick Nugent. Robert black is well bunkered, and has some great sloping and breaking greens.
